EDITORIAL: Thank you to our fallen heroes

Monday morning, our newsroom was out and about all across Michiana working to capture the magic of Memorial Day. We took photos of flashy floats, peppy marching bands and dedicated dancers as part of the day’s celebration.

While we certainly enjoyed the festivities, as we spoke to local veterans and city leaders, we were reminded of the true reason for the holiday — to remember those who have given their lives in service of our country.

Kevin Conklin, judge advocate for the state of Michigan Veterans of Foreign Wars, spoke at Dowagiac’s Memorial Day ceremony. He told the crowd listening that Memorial Day is more than just a three-day weekend. It is about paying tribute to those who died to protect our freedoms. He called the men and women who died in service of the U.S. heroes.

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey, who spoke at the Niles parade, shared a similar sentiment, saying that all of our fallen service men and women were brave.

We couldn’t agree more. Without the sacrifice of our veterans, those who died in the line of service, and service men and women who have gone missing in action, we could not enjoy many of the freedoms and comforts we have today.

We want to take this space to thank all of our fallen heroes for all they have done for this country. Their sacrifice is not and never will be forgotten.

Though Memorial Day, with all of its pomp and circumstance, may be over, we would encourage our readers to continue to remember the sacrifice that those who died in the line of duty have made.
