This year, my Starfish recognition goes out to a very special person and volunteer, Shawyn Howkins. Shawyn is the brother of Dowagiac Union High School counselor, Mark Howkins, and regularly attends athletic events. He has a quiet presence at sporting events, but his contributions are large.

Shawyn is the man behind the video equipment. He captures the athletes’ fire and energy in the form of digital game footage for multiple programs including girls and boys basketball, and football. The video is used in various ways.

Sometimes, he is just making memories for the kids. Other times, his work is used in the Hudl software to highlight student athletes and their abilities.

His dedication to this position and Dowagiac student athletes doesn’t waiver. He is out there in all types of game situations, all forms of weather, win or lose, home or away, filming games. Sometimes, he even comes out from behind the camera and assists the DUHS baseball team at practice.

Shawyn is the perfect choice for my Starfish selection. His efforts make a difference in the lives of kids one at a time. Thank you from Dowagiac Union High School!
