EDITORIAL: March to honor their memory
Published 9:22 am Monday, April 29, 2019
Throughout the past several years, participation in an important Niles tradition has dwindled significantly, and it is up to us to solve it.
American Legion member Bob Ahrens is seeking participants for this year’s Memorial Day parade, which steps off at 9 a.m. on Memorial Day, which is Monday, May 27.
We understand that this is a day off for many, with family cookouts and trips to the lake planned. While Memorial Day often signifies the start of summer in southwest Michigan, we encourage Niles area residents to remember what the holiday is all about.
Memorial Day is a day dedicated to remembering fallen heroes: people who have given their lives so that we may continue to be free. Without the sacrifice of these men and women, we would have no family picnics or beaches to frequent.
The Memorial Day parade has often served as a way for Niles area residents to set aside time in their three-day weekend to remember what the holiday is all about. Those who march in the parade march to show their support for fallen heroes, their loved ones, and those who are still fighting for our country.
There should really be no excuse why we cannot show our support through this event, which is strategically timed several hours before backyard barbecues and beach excursions.
We encourage all organizations and businesses who are able to sign up to participate in this parade, and remind our veterans and civilians left to mourn the loss of their loved ones that we support them.
