BUCHANAN — Defending state champion Coloma earned a sweep of host Buchanan Tuesday, but it was anything but easy for the Comets.

Coloma won the opening game 1-0 by scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning.

The Comets took the nightcap 10-6. Coloma had to withstand a six-run rally over the final two innings by the Bucks to earn the sweep.

“Sophie Lozmack threw a gem in the first game against Coloma,” said Buchanan coach Rachel Carlson. “She scattered five hits and had nine strikeouts. She is swinging the bat well too and is becoming a leader. We didn’t hit Megan well. She threw a tremendous game for Coloma.”

The Bucks (4-2) had five hits in the opening game, led by Abby Hickok’s 2-for-3 performance.

In the nightcap, Buchanan had seven hits, including two by Lozmack and a home run by Hickock.

Chloe Spitz took the loss as she lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Lozmack pitched the remaining six and a third innings, striking out three.

“The second game, we gave up some runs early,” Carlson said. “We didn’t give up and chipped some runs in the later innings. We could have shut down in the adversity but they choose to keep fighting. We are playing good ‘D’ and will continue to fine tune our game.”

Buchanan was back in action Thursday as it traveled to Decatur for another non-conference doubleheader.
