LAKE TOWNSHIP — A woman who died in a fatal crash early Sunday has been named by police.

Venice Spears, 36, was declared deceased at the scene of a crash in Lake Township. Police said they are continuing an investigation of the collision.

The crash occurred at mile 14 marker on I-94 in Lake Township Sunday, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers responded to the accident at 2:35 a.m. Sunday. Upon arrival, officers found Spears, the driver of a Chevy Sonic, was struck from the rear by a Ford F-250 pickup truck pulling a camper trailer.

Spears was unconscious and without a pulse when officers arrived on the scene. Rescue attempts were conducted, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officers.

According to a witness statement, the accident occurred when the Sonic had stopped in the right travel lane for unknown reasons. The driver of the Ford truck, Walter Stone, of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, was travelling behind another vehicle and the driver of the truck saw that car swerve to avoid hitting the Sonic. However, the truck could not swerve in time and struck the Sonic from the rear, causing both vehicles to become locked together, sliding off the roadway into the cable barriers, police said.

Stone and his passenger Margaret Toohey, 69, were treated and released at the scene.

The victim was transported to WMED in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for an autopsy.
