EDITORIAL: New owners have big shoes to fill

Although many have expected a transition in leadership at Judd Lumber for several years, the news of an acquisition was bittersweet for many Dowagiac area residents — and for good reason.

Since 1859, Dowagiac residents have known the Judds for their customer service, community citizenship and innovative business model. Most who have met Dick and Sandie Judd would describe them as warm, friendly neighbors, always willing to help their own.

The pair and couple — and Dick’s parents before that — are known for civic stewardship, often found at chamber of commerce functions, Rotary meetings and other community gatherings.

Over the years, the Judds have seen a lot of change, often renovating their business model and the physical business to adapt to the needs of contractors and home owners in an ever-evolving industry.

The business’ longevity is the proof in the pudding that the Judds’ model is the exact recipe for a successful business: take care of your customers, and they will take care of you.

We have had limited interaction with the new owners of Judd Lumber, Bryan and Jolynn Smith, but our trust in Dick and Sandie tells us they would not hand over the reins to a couple who does not embody the principles the Judds hold close to their heart.

Nonetheless, the Smiths are likely well aware that they have big shoes to fill, and that taking over an institution like Judd Lumber that has withstood the test of time will be no easy feat.

The Smiths would be wise to follow the Judds’ model in being involved in the community, adapting to new trends in construction trades, and, most importantly, serving the customers of the Dowagiac area as they would their own friends and neighbors.

The new owners are fortunate that the Judds have trained their customers to adapt to change, and we have no doubt that with the right approach, loyal shoppers with embrace the new owners as they have the Judds.
