LETTER: Gas tax will give Michigan infamous reputation

After reading Rep. Kim LaSata’s article on the proposed gas hike, I felt a response was in order.

First of all, I would like to say everything she said is probably true, which in itself is admirable for today’s politicians. It will be the highest gas tax in the nation, and will have an impact on border gas stations.

What bothers me is what she didn’t say.

This will be the third thing we will have at being the unceremonious thing of in the nation.

First was when [former] Republican Gov. John Engler gave us the unceremonious distinction of being number one in the nation of highest auto insurance.

Second was when [former] Gov. Rick Snyder gave us the unceremonious distinction of having the worst roads in the nation.

After the past eight years of a totally Republican controlled government, who did nothing about either one of those problems, I don’t know how she can criticize.

After eight years, they only can be known for tax breaks they have given to the billion dollar companies that our federal recently gave breaks to. These breaks were supposedly to bring more work to the state. We used to call that bribery or extortion.

I don’t pretend to know the answer to how to come up with money to fix our roads, but I do know that the governor said she was open to suggestions.

I also know it takes tax dollars to run this country and every time somebody gets a break, somebody has to pay.

I would also like to thank [Congressman] Fred Upton for his recent vote in favor of our constitution. If the president’s veto isn’t overridden, someday, someone will use the national emergency to override our right to keep and bear arms.

I would also like to say our politicians on both sides of the aisle should stop slinging mud because they are creating more division in this country than the Civil War did, and besides people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
