Carpenter ties mark at state meet

DOWAGIAC — Dowagiac freshman Sierra Carpenter tied a state record of 650 pounds total weight at the state powerlifting championships hosted recently.

Carpenter finished as the runner-up in her JV weight division after lifting 225 (squat), 125 (bench press) and 300 (deadlift).

The record was set by Abby Franklin of Alcona in 2017. She totaled 650 pounds after lifting 250 (squat), 130 (bench) and 270 (deadlift).

Also placing in the JV division for Dowagiac were Lavarius Davis, who finished fifth and Ryan Roach, who finished sixth.

In the varsity division, Gabe Green placed sixth and Madison Potter seventh respectively.

At the regional meet, Mike Sarabyn and Green both brought home championships.

The state powerlifting championships were hosted at Ionia High School March 9 (boys) and March 10 (girls).
