OUR VIEW: Post-season athletics show community spirit

It’s the time of year when all of the fair-weather fans come out of their hiding spots, don team colors, make the long trek to post-season games and cheer on their respective sports teams.

“True” sports fans and parents are aware of exactly who these fair-weather fans are, because the majority of them have been to almost every game throughout the long winter sports season. Naturally, they notice the newcomers who have not been cheering on the athletes until districts and regionals —the time of year when it really counts, if you consider
championships.

Regardless of whether or not these fans have made it to every battle leading up to tournament time, we are excited to see the bleachers full at post-season sporting events, and encourage as many who are able to continue supporting area sports teams.

As we learned when the Edwardsburg football team won the state championship last fall, the support of a community — and even the support of surrounding communities — goes a long way in keeping the momentum going for athletes. It draws a community and a region together, and unites everyone for a common cause. Plus — it’s fun!

The Brandywine Lady Cats basketball team is again battling for a state championship, and they could use your help.

Whether you live in the Brandywine district, are a Bobcat alum, or have never stepped foot inside Brandywine High School but like a good basketball game, we assure you the Lady Cats are always entertaining to watch.

As these young athletes continue to battle their way to the elusive state title, we hope you take advantage of the spring weather, pile up the car and head to Middleville Thornapple Kellogg High School in Middleville Tuesday night. Tipoff is at 7 p.m., and we’d love to hear you cheering them on!
