EDWARDSBURG — For most of Monday night’s Wolverine Conference South Division makeup contest against Sturgis, the Edwardsburg boys basketball team had the Trojans right where they wanted them.
A slow, grind it out pace kept the game low scoring and the Eddies right in it.
Unfortunately, Edwardsburg could not knock down enough shots to pull off the upset.
“We had some great opportunities against them, even on the inside, which are tough to come by as they are so big,” said Edwardsburg coach Stephen Wright. “They just didn’t go in. We had a couple of good looks from the outside that didn’t go in. Those just have to go in for us to have a chance.”
The Trojans dominated the third quarter and opened up a 10-point lead before settling for a 49-40 victory and the South Division title.
Edwardsburg dropped to third-place in the division behind Dowagiac.
The Eddies host Plainwell in their Wolverine Conference crossover game, which is set to tipoff at 7:15 p.m. today.
Edwardsburg set the pace in the opening quarter and was able to maintain that pace with the exception of the start of the second half.
The Eddies and Trojans were deadlocked at 8-8 after one quarter, while Sturgis opened up a 20-16 advance at halftime.
The Trojans used the fast start in the third quarter to turn a four-point advantage into a 10-point lead.
Sturgis was able to maintain that advantage for most of the third quarter and took a 36-26 advantage into the final eight minutes.
Sparked by a couple 3-pointers by Mac Gaideski off the bench, the Eddies cut the Trojans’ lead to 38-32, but would get no closer.
Gaideski led the Eddies with 12 points. Coby Sidenbender, Anthony Castelucci and Zach Strycker all finished with six points.
