Susan Bartel volunteer with Southwest Michigan’s VITA program. The VITA program is designed to assist those who need help with their taxes to complete them on time.

Where are you from?

Paw Paw, Michigan.

Susan Bartel

How long have you volunteered with the VITA program?

About 13 years.

What is your role with VITA?

I am a tax preparer.

Why did you start volunteering with the VITA program?

I have an accounting background and thought it was a great opportunity to do something for someone else. I wanted to share my ability and this was a good way to do it.

Why do you continue volunteering with VITA?

It’s the interaction and reaction of the people. They’re very appreciative when we can get them the full amount of refund they’re entitled to. At times they’re surprised at the amount they’re owed and the amount overwhelms them. And there’s a good group of people doing it. It’s fun to work with other tax preparers.

Why do you think it’s important for people to volunteer their time and resources?

Because we’re all given special talents and we have an obligation to share those with others, to use them to best of our ability.

Why do you think the VITA program is a valuable resource for Cass County residents?

In any county there are people in need that have to live on limited resources. When they’re out making an effort to make life best they can, we give them assistance in getting tax forms prepared to get back money that is allotted to them.
