Niles wins another SMAC crown

STEVENSVILLE — The Niles wrestling team was not challenged in winning another SMAC conference championship at Lakeshore High School on Saturday.

The Vikings had five individual champions in amassing 210 points.

Battle Creek Central was runner-up with 160.5 points, while Mattawan was third with 140 points and Lakeshore fourth with 140 points.

Rounding out the top five was Kalamazoo Central with 82.5 points.

Winning SMAC championships for Niles were Jamison Zimmerman (103), Bruce Brust (130), Kade Wagley (140), Dawson Bruckner (189) and Brian Soto (285).

Robert Buckland and Cade Best were runners-up at 152 for the Vikings, while Javond Ball (135) and Cole Simpson (160) were third.

Kenny Krempetx was fourth at 215 pounds.

Niles will now set its sights on winning back its Division 2 district championship from Lakeshore on Wednesday.

The Vikings will take on host St. Joseph at 6 p.m., while defending district champion Lakeshore will face Benton Harbor in the second semifinal at 6 p.m.

The championship match will be held 10 minutes after the completion of the last semifinal.
