On Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, Dwight David Burks of Buchanan, passed away suddenly at the age of 62.
Dwight was born on Oct. 9, 1955, in Picayune, Missisisippi to Reginald and Betty (Garcia) Burks. He grew up in Slidell, Louisiana, and graduated from Slidell High School in 1974. He married Heidi Ott in 1983 in Slidell, and they were married for 11 years. They raised their two children, Kale and Hayley, in Buchanan.
Dwight was a jack of all trades and used his skills as a general contractor to earn his living for many decades. He enjoyed spending his free time with friends and family, attending community events, and coaching and playing sports. Dwight was a lover of everything LSU, New Orleans Saints, and Chicago White Sox. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit. A man who would never shy away from an enthusiastic conversation. He enjoyed watching his children grow into adults and start their careers, and they gave him pride that he wanted to share with the whole community.
Dwight was preceded in death by his parents, Reginald and Betty (Garcia) Burks. He is survived by his children, Kale Burks of Buchanan; and Hayley Burks of Buchanan; Heidi Ott, the mother of his children, Buchanan; siblings, Jewel (Patrick) Clanton of Covington, Louisiana; Fredeen Cunningham of Cedar Key, Florida; Reginald (Manuela) Burks Jr. of Vienna, Austria.
A celebration of life will be held by the family at American Legion Post 51, Buchanan, from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018.
