Diana Hitchcock, 75, of Buchanan, is a longtime volunteer at Redbud Area Ministries in Buchanan. She also volunteers during her church’s annual community service day.
How did you get started volunteering at RAM?
When our new pastor came to our town, he was instrumental in getting our church involved with [RAM]. I was already involved with RAM before that, so I just thought I would come back and start volunteering here again.
How long have you been volunteering at RAM?
Thirteen years.
What do you like about volunteering there?
I don’t know. I really don’t. I just like helping people and keeping things organized for people to shop. I like helping people. I have always volunteered and liked helping people. I guess I just don’t know why I volunteer, I just do.
Why do you think volunteering is important to the community?
It’s important to support the community and help other people. Especially now-a-days, because there are so many people in need.
How would you encourage others to volunteer at RAM?
Just help. We try to get people to come in for even just for a little bit of time one day a week. We do clothing in the back room, and we are in overload, because there are only two of us back here. We need help doing clothing, hanging it and sorting and categorizing it and all that kind of stuff. We could use the help to help the people through RAM.
