Mother and child hurt in one car crash

LA GRANGE TOWNSHIP — A mother and child were hurt in a one-car crash Friday, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Richard Benhke reported that at approximately 7:42 a.m., his deputies were called out to investigate a personal injury accident that occurred at the intersection of Pokagon Highway and Oak Grove Road in La Grange Township. Erika Lane Stoop, 31, with her 4-year-old daughter, of Dowagiac, was driving westbound on Pokagon Highway.

Stoop said she was having a medical issue when she put her hazards on to pull over, before passing out. Witnesses said, Stoop ran off the roadway to the right, traveling up and over Oak Grove Road, hitting a tree on the other side of the roadway.

Both Stoop and her daughter were transported by Life Care Ambulance to South Bend Memorial for injuries. Stoop was wearing a seatbelt and a front facing car seat was used by her daughter.

Assisting agencies include Cass Fire Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, and Life Car Ambulance.
