An entertaining Sunday to say the least

Sunday was one for the ages in the world of sports.

Highlighted by Tigers Woods’ first PGA victory in five years, Sunday was a day of upsets and unexpected results.

Watching that sea of people following Woods up the fairway was something special to see.

It was also troublesome.

There are so many great young golfers currently on the PGA Tour, yet golf fans continue to cling to Woods as if he was the only golfer on the planet.

I agree that it was a compelling story given everything that Woods had been through since he fell from grace, but come on people, it is time to move on.

And while it was fun watching the national media go crazy over Woods winning a golf tournament, it was not like he won the Master’s or any other major. It was the Tour Championships Tournament, which has the claim to fame of crowning the FedEx Cup champion each year and nothing more.

By the way, Justin Rose, another tremendous golf talent, won the Cup and the bonus money that goes with it, although I really do not think anyone outside of his group cared.

Later that night another former all-time great was starting to show the cracks of aging as Tom Brady and the New England Patriots were manhandled by the previously winless Detroit Lions.

The debate rages on about whether or not Brady and the Patriots have reached the end of their dominance.

It probably is too early to really tell, but if you look at how they have played in two of the three weeks, one has to wonder.

And I know, I was there the last time New England struggled out of the gates before regaining its form and dominating the league, I will tell you this:  these are not those Patriots in terms of talent.

The Lions are not the only team to pull off a shocking upset on Sunday.

The Buffalo Bills knocked off a preseason Super Bowl contender Minnesota in dominating fashion behind rookie quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen is one of a handful of rookie QBs that are playing extremely well to start the season.

I am going to be interested in seeing just which one terms out to be the best of the bunch.

Personally, I think they can all be quality starting quarterbacks with one or two of them being franchise quarterbacks that lead their teams out of the shadows and into the bright lights of the NFL postseason.

One of those quarterbacks, who I must admit I had very little respect for, Baker Mayfield, impressed me as he came off the bench and led the Cleveland Browns to their first victory in more than a year.

My impressions of Mayfield actually began to change while watching “Hard Knocks” on HBO this summer.

This kid has something special about him. If he can handle all the success that will come to him in Cleveland if the Browns continue to improve, I think he has a chance to be a really good NFL quarterback. He will never be Tom Brady or Drew Brees, but he could be the one who finally leads Cleveland back to be a respectable franchise.

If the first couple of weeks of the NFL season are any indication, I cannot wait for the rest of the year to unfold.
