Two detained in alleged breaking and entering attempt at Hackers

NILES TOWNSHIP — Two Benton Harbor residents were arrested early Wednesday and are suspected to be in connection with an attempted breaking and entering at Hackers Fun Zone in Niles Township, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

The incident leading to the arrest occurred at approximately 12:43 a.m., when Berrien County Sheriff’s Department deputies stumbled upon an alleged breaking and entering in progress.

According to police, the authorities were on patrol when they heard loud banging noises coming from Hackers, 3019 S. 11th St. Upon investigating, deputies located four unknown subjects running from the scene. They also noticed that the back door of the building appeared to have been kicked several times, indicating an attempted breaking and entering.

Police pursued and detained two of the individuals, Melvin Clinton, 17, and Austin Barney, 24, both of Benton Harbor. One of the suspects, though not clear which, had gloves a bandana and suspected marijuana on their person.

The detained subjects were lodged at the Berrien County Jail. The case has been turned over to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office.
