BERRIEN TOWNSHIP — A 23-year-old Niles woman was arrested after she allegedly struck and killed a bicyclist while driving intoxicated Saturday, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were dispatched to Pokagon Road near Jones Road in Berrien Township at 4:12 p.m. Saturday to investigate a report that a small Ford SUV had struck a bicyclist. Deputies soon confirmed the cyclist, Todd Harrington, 32, of Berrien Springs, was deceased at the scene.

A witness and his young son collected a vehicle description and plate registration number of the suspected vehicle at the scene. Deputies used this information to find the home address of the vehicle’s registered owner.

Sheriff’s Deputies from Niles Township Patrol intercepted the suspect and the suspect vehicle, and the driver was arrested on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, as well as leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

Preliminary results indicated that the suspect driver’s blood alcohol content was more than three times the legal limit. Her name is being withheld pending arraignment.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted on scene by the Berrien Springs/Oronoko Township Police Department, the Michigan State Police, SMCAS Ambulance and the Eau Claire Fire Department.
