Benton Harbor police investigating multiple shootings

BENTON HARBOR — The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety is seeking information about several shootings that took place Sept. 11 and 12 and injured multiple people.

The shootings started in the overnight hours of Sept. 11 and Sept. 12. The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety responded to multiple reports of shots being fired and people injured by gunfire.

Benton Harbor Department of Police Safety responded to the 1000 block of Bishop to a report of shots fired at approximately 11:39 p.m. and found a 28-year-old male victim suffering from a non-life threating gunshot wound to the lower leg.  The victim was transported by Medic1 ambulance to Lakeland Hospital for treatment.  At this time, there is no suspect information on this shooting, according to police.

At approximately 11:45 p.m., BHDPS officers were called to Lakeland Emergency Room for a report of a 29-year-old male who was also wounded by gunfire. Officers investigated and found that the man was wounded in the 1000 block of Jennings.  The victim in this shooting is suffering serious injuries as a result of this shooting.  There is no suspect information for this incident at this time.

While investigating the prior two shootings, BHDPS officers heard gunshots at 12:30 a.m. on Sept. 12.  Officers responded to the 600 block of Empire and found two male victims at a residence who were suffering from multiple gunshots.  The victims were treated and transported by Medic1 ambulance to Lakeland Hospital for treatment.  One male is currently in critical condition while the other suffered non-life-threatening injuries.    

Detectives from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, Benton Township PD, St. Joe City DPS, St. Jo Township Police Department, Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police and the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force are actively investigating all three of the incidents.  There were three long guns and a handgun recovered during this investigation.  There is no suspect information available at this time.  Police said it is currently unknown if these incidents are related.
