Michigan Gateway Community Foundation awards funds to local programs

BUCHANAN — The Board of Trustees for Michigan Gateway Community Foundation have awarded funds to the following programs from Berrien and Cass counties. 

• $75,000 to Woodlands Behavioral Health Network, from the Cass County Mental Health Foundation Fund for Behavioral Services and Community Outreach

  $2,000 to the Pregnancy Care Center from the Christian Missions donor advised fund, in support of a satellite office in Benton Harbor.

• $3,000 to the city of Buchanan from Buchanan Area Fund, for replacing the Clark Guard House Roof

• $10,000 to the Cass County Council on Aging from the Cass County Mental Health Foundation Fund for the Adult Day Respite Program

• $4,145 to Berrien County CASA from Buchanan Area Fund ($3,145) and Niles Area Fund ($1000) to train 10 new child advocate volunteers

• $1,250 to Cass County CASA from the Cass Community Fund, to support development of a 5-year strategic plan

• $5,973.07 to the YMCA of Soutwest Michigan from Marcellus Swim Fund for Swim lessons for Marcellus third graders

• $3,283 to Brandywine Community Schools from the Brandywine School Improvement Fund for the Summer My Way program

• $5,000 to Brandywine Community Schools from the Brandywine School Improvement Fund supporting the Athletic Hall of Fame

• $1,800 to Buchanan Community Schools from Youth Funds for an after-school math tutoring program

• $1,500 to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Berrien and Cass Counties, from Youth Funds for a Reading Buddies Program in Dowagiac

• $5,000 to Buchanan Community Schools from Buchanan Area Fund for playground equipment at Moccasin School

Founded in 1978, Michigan Gateway Community Foundation serves southern Berrien County and Cass County Michigan.  The Foundation was established with gifts from many citizens in amounts ranging from a few dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Only the income generated by the investment of these gifts is used in grant making. A gift to the community funds, such as those from Niles, Buchanan and Cass County serve these communities in perpetuity.

The Foundation accepts grant proposals four times each year with submission dates of Aug. 1, and Feb. 1. Prompt consideration is given to all grant requests, with decisions usually available within one month. Each proposal will be evaluated by the Foundation for its potential value to the community and for the availability of funding resources.
