LETTER: Disappointed in the failed millage

Published 8:29 am Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Like so many others, I was so very disappointed that the recent Dowagiac District Library millage failed to pass. Under the direction of Matt Weston and his staff, the library has made marked improvements in collection development, programming, and basically meeting the needs of so many in this city and its surround townships.

I know some question: “What does the library do for me and my family? I seldom even use it?” This is the “what’s in it for me?” mentality. Instead, we should think of the common good the library does for our neighbors and community. Indeed, the library contributes to making the entire area a better place to live and work.

Outside of good schools, libraries are still one of the prime factors prospective home buyers consider when relocating (Increased property values anyone?).

We in this area are fortunate to have excellent schools, the Dowagiac Historical Museum, the Beckwith Theatre, Southwestern Michigan College, the May Festival, summer concerts and much more.

Someday soon, I hope these will be augmented by an even better Dowagiac District Library serving not only the city but the local townships as well.
