LETTER: President Trump meets the queen

President Trump met the queen in Windsor Castile for tea during his European trip.  I don’t tweet, but I read that the twitter world was filled with criticism of President Trump’s behavior before the Queen’s tea party.

Tweeters criticized his lateness because the Queen waited 15 minutes for his motorcade to arrive; however, I watched the event on TV.  He arrived one minute prior to the planned meeting.  Since he arrived by car, he may have been held up by factors out of his control.

People criticized his appearance because he didn’t button his jacket and his red tie dangled below his belt.  He did look lumbering and sloppy next to the queen.  Guilty.  He also turned his back on the queen momentarily.  Guilty, but so what?  It looked a bit awkward, but I didn’t think it was disrespectful.

Finally, British Tweeters were shocked that he didn’t bow and the First Lady didn’t curtsy.  Now here, I utterly fail to understand that criticism.  President Trump is head of state; the queen is head of state.  I thought it looked appropriate.

President Obama deeply bowed from the waist to the Japanese emperor and the Saudi king — now that was embarrassing.
