DOWAGIAC — Visiting Sturgis got a pair of first-half goals from Meg Scheske on its way to a 5-0 Wolverine Conference soccer victory over Dowagiac Monday.

Scheske’s second goal was assisted Emma Boland, who opened the second-half scoring for the Trojans.

Boland, whose first goal was assisted by Scheske, picked up her second goal of the night 10 minutes later to give Sturgis a 4-0 advantage on the Chieftains.

The final goal of the match was scored by Brookelyn Wheeler.

“The girls put up a heck of a fight tonight,” Dowagiac coach Chad Davis said. “It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but they did move the ball well and we’re starting to form as a team. Other than a couple of mental breakdowns I thought we played well.”

Dowagiac was outshot by the Trojans 29-15, with freshman goalkeeper Kaylah Contreras stopping 24 shots.

Wheeler started the game in the net for Sturgis before giving way to Rylee Wanamaker in the second half. The pair combined to stop all 15 shots by the Chieftains.
