NILES — It was not the best game the Brandywine (3-3-1) soccer team played all year but it was good enough to avoid falling in the BSC Conference standings against Comstock Monday night.

In spite of the visiting Colts outshooting the Bobcats nearly 4-1, a late goal by freshman Kelli Scoggin helped Brandywine escape defeat and finish tied in a 1-1 draw.

After a scoreless first half, Comstock was able to score a goal past freshman goalkeeper Gabby Inman at the 55-minute mark. At the 66th minute Scoggin was able to kick in the equalizer to the left side of a one-on-one with the goalie after a nice lead pass from freshman Ava Doctor.

Comstock had one last chance to score with five seconds left in the game but Inman was able to make her 11th save of the game to preserve the tie.

“I was like, ‘oh my gosh, I just got that,’” a very excited Scoggin said about her first career varsity goal. “It was just an amazing feeling that I did this for my team. This wasn’t just my goal. It was our goal as a team.”

Brandywine coach Katie Kovac was overall pleased with the way the game finished, but her young team, which consists of 10 freshmen, are still growing up into varsity players.

“We did a lot better job communicating on defense with our rotation in the back,” Kovac said after the game. “We’re still lacking quite a bit offensively. We have to find a way to get the ball to the back of the net.”

Brandywine was outshot 13-2 in the first half so the second half adjustments were quite obvious. “The thing I told them was we have to shoot the ball,” Kovac said. “We have to start shooting the ball or we’re not going to score so they did a lot more of that (in the second half).”

Brandywine soccer is back in action Wednesday as they travel to Covert.
