BANGOR — Visiting Brandywine swept a pair of non-conference baseball games from Bangor in which it tied a state record for stolen bases.

The Bobcats defeated the Vikings 11-7 and 7-4.

In the opening game, Brandywine swiped 16 bases to tie for fifth-place all-time for most stolen bases in a single game.

The Bobcats are tied with Hale (2008) and Kinglsey (2005).

Hale also set the state record in that same game against Whittemore-Prescott with 24 stolen bases in the other game of the doubleheader.

“I didn’t realize we had that many while the game was going on,” veteran Brandywine coach David Sidenbender said. “We were getting good jumps, and they were struggling a little with their coverage, so we just kept taking advantage. Success can come in many areas of a baseball game and finding that area and taking advantage of it can determine winning and losing.”

The Bobcats stole 12 bases in the nightcap against the Vikings.

Brandywine (4-2) used a pair of three-run innings to help erase a 3-0 deficit against Bangor in the opening game.

Brock Prenkert worked the first five innings to earn the victory as he allowed four runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Corbin Eckenberger pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

The Bobcats finished with seven hits, including two each by Eckenberger and Ty Mickiewicz.

Joey Coveyeou led the steal parade with four, while Gabe Gouin swiped three bases. Eckenberger and Connor Janowiak both finished with a pair of steals.

Kevin Conrad, Derek Lloyd, Mickiewicz, Derrick Miller and Prenkert also had  steals.

In the nightcap, the Bobcats outscored Bangor 4-3 in the first inning and then 3-1 over the final two innings.

The game was stopped after three innings due to darkness.

Eckenberger went the distance to record the victory as he allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts.

Conrad doubled for Brandywine, which finished with five hits.

“We have a young, inexperienced team, so to go on the road and pull out a couple wins is huge positive,” Sidenbender said.
