Dowagiac man shot Wednesday in domestic dispute

DOWAGIAC — A Dowagiac man was shot during a domestic incident Wednesday, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers responded to the incident around 10:43 a.m. on Pokagon Street, after they were advised that a woman had called 911 saying that she shot her boyfriend during a domestic incident at their residence. When officers arrived, they found the 31-year-old female suspect with the victim, a 49-year-old male from Dowagiac, who had been shot twice in the legs.

The man told police that he and his girlfriend had gotten into an argument and during the argument she retrieved a handgun and shot him twice.  The victim was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital and was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

At the scene, officers located several shell casings as well as the handgun used in the incident.  The female suspect was interviewed by police and told police that she shot her boyfriend in the leg during the domestic argument. There was no one else at the residence at the time of this incident.

The woman was arrested and lodged at the Cass County Jail on charges of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder. The name of the suspect is being withheld pending her arraignment in Cass County 4th District Court.

Police were assisted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Pokagon Tribal Police Department and the Dowagiac Fire Department during this incident.
