Vikings sweep Portage Northern

NILES — The Niles boys basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 62-52 victory over visiting Portage Northern Friday.

The Vikings led 19-13 after one and 30-22 at halftime.

The Vikings outscored the Huskies 32-30 in the second half to pick up the victory.

Portage Northern cut the Niles advantage from 14 points to four with three minutes remaining.

“Senior Trey Gatson hit a huge 3-pointer for us,” Niles coach Todd Pawielski said.

Robert Brown led Niles with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Chad Barton had 11 points.

“Austin Brookins had an outstanding floor game,” Pawielski said. “Kendall Whitelow played nice defense off the bench.”

Girls basketball

For the second time this season, the Niles girls basketball team defeated Portage Northern.

The Vikings defeated the Huskies 46-31 Friday night.

Niles jumped out to a 15-2 first quarter lead, but only scored a combined 14 points in the second and third quarters.

Luckily, Portage Northern also struggled to score points on those quarters and trailed Niles 29-15 heading to the fourth quarter.

Alycia Patterson led the Vikings with 12 points, while Reese Davies added 11 and Lajan Mitchell nine.
