CALVIN TOWNSHIP — A 17-year-old Cassopolis teenager was hospitalized after the vehicle he was riding in collided with a box truck after hitting a patch of ice outside Cassopolis Thursday afternoon, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were dispatched to a reported two-vehicle crash in the 1700 block of Chain Lake Street in Calvin Township at 3 p.m.

The accident occurred when a 16-year-old Cassopolis teenager lost control of her vehicle due to the icy road while driving east on Chain Lake Street. Her vehicle crossed over the center line and struck the side of a westbound box truck operated by 53-year-old Anthony Falcone, of Elkhart.

A 17-year-old Cassopolis teenager was riding with the 16-year-old at the time of the accident. Crews with Life Care Ambulance transported him to Dowagiac’s Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Seatbelts were used by all parties, and police do not suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident, though they believe speed was.

Members of the Penn Township Fire Department assisted deputies and ambulance personnel at the scene.
