Hartford man dies in fatal injury crash

BERRIEN TOWNSHIP — A Hartford man died after succumbing to his injuries in a car versus pedestrian accident Thursday morning in Berrien Township, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators determined that the crash occurred at 7:18 a.m. A 60-year-old Niles man travelling north on Old US 31 had just passed Deans Hill Road, when he noticed an object in front of him in the roadway. He tried to avoid the object but was unable. It was determined that the subject, Lee Hauweghen, 52, was walking across the roadway when he was struck, police said.

Upon arrival, deputies found a passerby doing CPR on the Hauweghen, who was unresponsive Hauweghen was transported to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash. 

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

Authorities at the scene included Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, SMCAS Ambulance, Eau Claire/Berrien Township Fire Department, Berrien Springs/Oronoko Township Police, Berrien Sheriff’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.
