Fire auxiliary to host trivia night

An annual fundraiser for the Edwardsburg Fire Auxiliary has sold out of space.

The fire auxiliary’s annual trivia night, which the group has been hosting since 2012, recently sold out of tables for the event. This year’s trivia night will take place at 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Edwardsburg American Legion. Entry to the event was $100 per table, with food and drinks available from a cash bar. All proceeds will go to the Edwardsburg Fire Department.

“It’s great to meet that goal,” said organizer Karen Harris of selling out of tables. “We do every year, and it’s great to see people responding to the trivia night.”

The auxiliary got the idea to host the trivia night after attending another trivia night in South Bend. Inspired by that trivia night, the auxiliary began to plan what would become its annual fundraiser, which features 100 questions based on a theme. Past themes have included Edwardsburg trivia and this year’s event will have no theme, instead opting for general knowledge questions. Firefighters Paul Harris and Chad King also volunteer as DJs for the event.

“[King and Harris] add a lot of color-commentary to keep things fun and interesting,” Harris said. “We do what we can to make it as fun as possible.”

The event is always hosted the day before the Super Bowl to get people excited about the trivia night and out of the house during the depths of winter, Harris said.

“We wanted to provide people in the community something to do in the winter when cabin fever is starting to set in,” Harris said. “People really seem to enjoy it as a fundraiser.”

Harris said that believes people enjoy the fundraiser not only because it is a fun event, but because they support the Edwardsburg Fire Department, as the event can help the auxiliary purchase equipment for the fire department.

“The firefighters are all volunteers, so they don’t always get the nicest equipment or things like that,” Harris said. “The auxiliary wants to provide them with things they wouldn’t normally get and help them do what they do. … I think the community appreciates that.”

Despite the fact that the trivia night has sold out of tables, the auxiliary is still looking for businesses to sponsor the event. Sponsors would have their names featured on the trivia presentation and on other items at the event.

“We are always happy to take more sponsorship,” Harris said.

If someone was hoping to take part in the trivia night, but missed out on the chance to purchase a table, Harris said she would advise them to contact the auxiliary on Facebook to be notified if a table opens up.
