Sheriff K-9 helps locate pair of break-in suspects

SISTER LAKES — Two Indiana men suspected of breaking into a home outside Magician Lake are in police custody, after a sheriff K-9 tracked them through a Sister Lakes woods early Thursday morning, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

The department’s K-9 unit was dispatched to assist officers with the Silver Creek Township Police Department for a reported breaking and entering near the 31000 block of Magician Lake Terrace in Silver Creek Township at 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Township police were dispatched earlier after receiving a report of a suspicious vehicle near the property, which had been broken into.

Cass County K-9 Faust began searching for the suspects, tracking their scent from the back door of the house through some woods a half-mile away. The two suspects, a 26-year-old Michigan City man and a 29-year-old Elkhart man, were found hiding in the woods, and were taken into custody by police.

The two were transported to Cass County Jail on several breaking and entering related charges. Police have not released their names at this time.

Officers with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office and Pokagon Tribal Police Department assisted Cass County and Silver Creek Township personnel at the scene.
