LETTER: Don’t vote Oprah for president yet

Published 11:02 pm Tuesday, January 16, 2018

read Ms. Neldon’s opinion piece, titled “Those who tell the stories rule the world.”  She wrote about Oprah Winfrey’s speech at the Golden Globes show.  Hollywood awards shows are never on my viewing schedule.

Why would anyone want to watch 20 to 50 millionaires for three hours congratulate themselves and award trophies to each other for doing what they get paid to do?

When I read Ms. Neldon’s piece, I vowed to see or read what everybody is talking about.  Google has a transcript of her speech, which wowed me maybe not as much as it wowed Ms. Neldon, but I agreed with everything Ms. Winfrey said.

Oprah Winfrey’s speech impressed Ms. Neldon because Winfrey mentioned journalism’s search for the truth.  Her speech impressed me because of her eloquence concerning women and the end of their victimhood.  My wife worked and my two daughters work now.  I believe sexual harassment is unfair and disgusting.  Winfrey’s speech illustrated the steep and long climb toward justice women have made and continue to make in our society.

At this point, I’m in the mainstream.  I refuse to go further in this adulation of a good speech to advocate like some that Oprah Winfrey run for president in 2020 until I learn more about her policies that she supports.

I’m reasonably confident that I understand her civil rights positions.  But what is her foreign policy?  How would she build up our national defense?  How would she continue to build up our economy?  It would be very interesting to watch two very rich people with an entertainment background go at each other.  It might make 2016 seem dull by comparison.
