LETTER: Local leaders need to wise up about marijuana

Under Michigan Law, what the promoters of the marijuana dispensaries are proposing would subject them to 15 years in prison, and a $10,000,000 fine, absent of adding the word “medical” to the marijuana that they want to manufacture and sell.

Now they’ve shown up in our communities seeking license to produce and sell this same substance here.

I lived in Benton Harbor for a year. You know who the most popular people are in Benton Harbor? It’s the people with the medical marijuana cards.

It’s a running joke, people with no medical condition know which doctors to go to and what they need to say to get a card. Once they get a card, they go and buy as much “medical marijuana” as the law allows and they sell it, not to people with medical conditions, but to people who want to get high, and this goes on everywhere.

Understand that the proponents who want to bring this to our community are “Smoke & Vape” shop owners, that’s how concerned they are about the “medical” well being of the people of our community.

City council members need to stand up and say “not here.” Let our communities be known for standing up for what’s good and right, not for giving license to, and being complicit with, those who don’t.
