What’s happening at the Niles District Library

NILES — The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Monday, Jan. 8

• 4 to 5 p.m. — Friends of NDL Meeting

• 6 to 7 p.m. – Tween Game Night

The Niles District library is starting a new game night just for children ages 9-12. There will be X-Box, and board games out, as well as art and crafts supplies. The community is invited to join in for the game night. Snacks will be provided

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Genealogy Book Club

This club is ideal for those who love reading and sharing their family. The community is invited to join Mollie and Caryn as they “tag team” and share a different book the second Monday of each month. We will not be reading genealogy “how-to” books, but rather, novels, memoirs, and personal narratives,which weave a thread of family history research into each story. Those wishing to do so may come to the Library prior to the book club and use the resources to research their own family history and genealogy.

7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. The people of CDA do not make distinctions in the recovery process based on any particular substance. The basis of the program is abstinence from all mood-changing and mind-altering chemicals, including street-type drugs, alcohol and unnecessary medication.

Tuesday, Jan. 9

• 10:30 a.m. – Passport Pals

The community is invited for a special story time tour of the world. Each week, there will be books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the special country of the month.

• 6 to 6:30 p.m.- Chips and Chapters

This activity includes a read aloud story time. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while listeners eat chips and follow along. All ages are welcome.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Fiction for Foodies

Fiction for Foodies meets the second Tuesday of each month. The book club also serves as a potluck. Read, cook, eat and discuss. Books for each month can be picked up at the Information Desk.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Pajama Storytime

A fun evening of three stories, music, and movement, and a craft. Thos who attend are welcome to wear pajamas.

Wednesday, Jan. 10

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., squeakers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., squigglers (18 months-5 years) at 10:30 a.m., story time (children ages 3+) at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Niles Public Arts Commission

The Niles Public Arts Commission is seeking members. Responsibilities include advise and consult with the Community Development Director on all matters concerning the Art Commission. For more information and qualifications contact, the Niles District Library.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA Niles has a room reserved from 7 to 8 p.m. at the library every Monday and Wednesday. For more information visit cdaweb.org.

Thursday, Jan. 11

• 10 a.m.  to 1 p.m. — The Connection

As Berrien County’s Housing Resource Center, The Connection provides a centralized intake that works together with the consumer to rapidly re-house those who are homeless.

• 10 a.m. — Special Edition: Movie Day

The movie feature will be “Toy Story 3.” All ages and abilities are welcome to the sensory sensitive showing. The volume isn’t too loud, and there’s room at the back for those who prefer not to sit still. Popcorn will be served.

• 10:30 and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

Storytime features three books, a color song, and music and movement. The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet and a craft.

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available weekly to teach people how to play Mahjong.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens are invited to come and hang out. There will be games, books, and a place to study here in the Teen Department. Snacks are provided.

Friday, Jan. 12

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization. TOPS offers tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with the opportunity for group fellowship and recognition. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS has helped millions of people live healthier lives. New members are welcome.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

People may enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on your their yarn or sewing project.  Rookies are welcome; our teacher and a few loaner tools will help you get started.

• 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.- Tween Book Club

Children ages 8 to 12 are invited for book discussion group.

Saturday, Jan. 13

• 9:30 to 11 a.m. — Basic Computer Class

This class is offered to help those who wish to learn more basic computer skills. Computer Basics classes will be offered every month on the second Saturday. Class space is limited so please sign up at the Information Desk, or call (269) 683-8545, ext. 112.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Toddler Dance Party

This musical program is aimed for toddlers to help strengthen the little brain and body muscles. There will be music to reinforce hand eye coordination, cross-brain exercises, and tactile and sensory movements. This program is for children ages infant to 5.

• 1 to 2 p.m. — Jr. Garden Club

Each month, Ms. Ann will present a lesson on gardening and nature. There will also be a snack, and a craft connected with the topic. This group is for children ages 3 to 12.

• 1 to 2:30 p.m. — DNA Basics: A Presentation of the TreeClimbers Genealogy Group

This presentation will help people become familiar with genealogy terminology, what tests are available, and the differences between the results they provide. Third party tools will also be covered. The presenter, Patsy Miller, is President of the Berrien County Genealogical Society and Registrar of the Algonquin Chapter DAR.  A lifelong resident of Berrien County, she has been working on her family history for over 20 years.

• 1 to 5 p.m. — Game Day for Adults

This activity is for those 18 or older, who like video games or board games. There will be board games, cards, tabletop games, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U games set up. Those interested can also bring their own games.

• 5:45 to 8 p.m. — Teen and Adult Nerf Night-Afterhours

Teens (13 and older) and adults are invited to come to the library for an after-hours round of Nerf games with an emphasis on strategy and teamwork. Registration is 5:30 to 6 p.m., game play begins at 6 p.m. Those interested are advised to arrive before 6 p.m. All participants must have a signed waiver on file in order to play.
