LETTER: Mueller is a patriot, Trump is not

Published 6:42 pm Tuesday, December 26, 2017

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is an honest, honorable and patriotic man.

He served as a Marine Corps officer and was awarded a Bronze Star medal with combat “V” for heroism, as well as a Purple Heart.

He served as a United States attorney, an assistant attorney general in the criminal division, and as acting deputy attorney general. From 2001 to 2013 he served as the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mueller is currently serving as the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Russians and the Trump campaign. So far, he and his team have obtained grand jury indictments against four members of the Trump campaign: Paul Manafort, Rick Gates, George Papadopoulos and Michael Flynn.

Both Papadopoulos and Flynn have pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian operatives. Both are now cooperating in the special counsel’s investigation.

In stark contrast to Robert Mueller, Donald Trump is a dishonest, dishonorable and unpatriotic man.

Instead of working with the FBI and other government intelligence agencies to identify the full extent of the Russian cyberattacks on our democracy and develop methods to prevent future attacks, Trump has consistently tried to undermine these investigations. PolitiFact, the Pulitzer-Prize winning fact checking service, rated Trump’s statements about the investigation as “the lie of the year.”

As the special counsel and his team continue to move closer and closer to the president, Trump and his far right-wing Republican accomplices will undoubtedly continue their attempts to undermine the investigation. We the people must insist that their efforts not succeed. The investigation needs to proceed until all the facts have come out.

Please contact Fred Upton and demand that he play an active role in countering the destructive efforts of his unpatriotic Republican colleagues and, if Trump is implicated in either collusion with the Russians or obstruction of justice, that he vote for articles of impeachment.
