SISTER LAKES — Members of the Sister Lakes community have become “Reading Elves” for students at Sister Lakes Elementary this year.

Teachers Deb Barber and Kay Skogen said this is their second year doing the reading elves project at the school. They wanted to include the community in the project this year.

This year, donation cans were left at Quality Marathon, Wright Place, Myer’s Super Value, The Strand, Dockside Dan, Sister Lakes Brewery, A Cut Above the Rest, Chemical Bank, Jimmy’s Liquor Store, Sister Lakes Hardware, Studio 690 and Sweet Thangs Cafe for people to donate money to buy books for the students.

Each week, Barber would collect the money. Donations were also given from Rudy Construction, L & A Gutters, retired teacher Doni Smith, retired librarian Patti Amundsen, and Cindy Checkley and Skogen contributed from her book fair account. Skogen and Barber purchased the books through the Scholastic book club for the students.

Barber and Skogen were excited to see the students’ smiles when they got to pick out a book to read over the holidays. The teachers want to thank people from the community who donated, and the area businesses for allowing the school to put the donation cans at their local business.
