LANSING — Secretary of State Ruth Johnson announced Monday that her offices collected more than 10,000 pounds of food and nearly $2,000 during its 2017 Harvest Gathering food drive.

“We’re so pleased to be able to help our community,” Johnson said. “Our customers and staff were generous and thoughtful in donating to this cause and making sure everyone in their area has a happy holiday season.”

The Sparta office ranked first in food collection, bringing in nearly 5,000 pounds of food. The Detroit Livernois office collected 710 pounds of food, and the Secretary of State building at the state Secondary Complex brought in about 650 pounds of food and raised $651.

The Midland office collected $184. Many offices also received health care items for donation.

Collected items were distributed to local food banks.

Harvest Gathering collection boxes were placed in Secretary of State offices and state office buildings during the fall food drive. Customers also mailed additional funds directly to the Food Bank Council of Michigan.

The department has been participating in the Harvest Gathering campaign since 1999. The campaign is coordinated by the Food Bank Council of Michigan, which supplies the state’s regional food banks through donations of food and money. The regional food banks serve food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters in every Michigan county.

The statewide Michigan Harvest Gathering 2017 campaign has so far collected more than $317,000, and more contributions are coming in.
