What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Monday, Dec. 4

• 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. — OnStaff USA Hiring Event

A representative from On Staff USA will be at the library recruiting for several local positions. For more information, visit onstaffusa.com for more information.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night

This activity is for tweens. The library is starting a new game night just for youth aged 9 to 12. There will be an Xbox 360 (or Xbox One) and board games out. As well as art and crafts supplies. Snacks will be provided.

• 6 to 8 p.m. — Creative Cooking: Holiday Candy Making

The public is invited to learn how to make holiday treats. Suggestions are welcome, but the  plan is to make caramel from scratch and mocha truffles and demonstrate how to use candy molds. The molds can be checked out after the lesson. Seats are limited. Please call (269) 683-8545 ext. 112 to register.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA Niles has a room reserved at the library every Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. For more information please visit cdaweb.org

Tuesday, Dec. 5

10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

The community is invited for a special story time tour of the world. Each week, there will be books, songs, a craft, and other super surprises relating to the special country of the month.

• Noon to 12:30 p.m. — Brandywine Elementary Music Club-Holiday Performance

The public is invited to hear some young musicians in the Rotunda for a delightful holiday performance presented by the Niles Noon Optimists’ Club.

• 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Tabletop

RPG Night

This activity is great for those who enjoy Dungeons and Dragons, Shadowrun, and other tabletop role playing games.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Chips and

Chapters

This activity includes a read aloud story time. Every Tuesday, Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while listeners eat chips and follow along. All ages are welcome.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego

Building Challenge

The library will provide a bucket of Legos and the public is invited to use their creativity to craft something.

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Tim Talks: The Release of the JFK Files

The library will host an evening of talk and discussion about the release of the recent JFK files and an analysis of the data surrounding the assassination, with an emphasis on Lee Harvey Oswald and his alleged role in the assassination.

• 7 to 9 p.m. — Niles Art

Association

The public is welcome to a Christmas Party. There will be games, refreshments and show and tell. Those interested are advised to bring a pen or pencil to participate in the games. Those who wish to join in with the trading card exchange, please bring a wrapped item to share. These are usually 2 ½ x 3 ½ use any type of medium. Since it is Christmas, we allow any size and it can be the regular card, fabric or wood and any theme- it doesn’t have to be a Christmas theme.

Wednesday, Dec. 6

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., squeakers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., squigglers (18 months-5 years) at 10:30 a.m., story time (children ages 3+) at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 4 to 7 p.m. — Coupon Exchange

Library associate Ann welcomes the public to the Youth Services area for a twice-a-month coupon exchange (first and third Wednesdays). Those interested should bring the coupons they’re not interested in to swap for ones they do want. This program is open to teens and adults.

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. – Card Crafting

Supplies will be provided. Those interested are asked to please register in advance by calling (269) 683-8545, ext. 112 or emailing CommunityEngagement@nileslibrary.com, or stop by the information desk at the library. This program is open to teens and adults; activities for children will be available by request.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA does not make distinctions in the recovery process based on any particular substance. The basis of the program is abstinence from all mood-changing and mind-altering chemicals, including street-type drugs, alcohol and unnecessary medication.

Thursday, Dec. 7

The Connection

As Berrien County’s Housing Resource Center, The Connection provides a centralized intake that works together with the consumer to rapidly re-house those who are homeless.  Housing Resource Specialists will be at the library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. • 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available weekly to teach how to play Mahjong.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens are invited to participate in games, books, and a great place to study here in the Teen Department. Snacks are provided.

Friday, Dec. 8

• 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. — Eye Opener Networking Event

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization. TOPS offers tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with the opportunity for group fellowship and recognition. Established in 1948 to champion weight-loss support and success, TOPS has helped millions of people live healthier lives. New members are welcome.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

People may enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on your their yarn or sewing project.  Rookies are welcome; our teacher and a few loaner tools will help you get started.

Saturday, Dec. 9

• 10 to 10:30 a.m. — Toddler Dance Party

This musical program is aimed for toddlers to help strengthen body and brain muscles. Music is used to reinforce hand-eye coordination, cross-brain exercises, and tactile and sensory movements. This program is for children ages birth-5 years.

• 11 a.m. to noon — Daniel

Tiger Party

The library is celebrating the classic children’s character, Daniel Tiger. There will be a Daniel Tiger storytime, crafts, a snack, and games. Join us in the Children’s Department.

• 1 to 2 p.m. — Jr. Garden Club

There will be materials to make an evergreen the swag. For children ages 3 to 12.

• 1 to 5 p.m. — Game Day

for Adults

There will be board games, cards, tabletop games, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U games set up and ready to enjoy.

• 2 to 5 p.m. — Winter is Coming!

This activity is for those who are a fan of the “Game of Thrones” books or television show. This event will include “Game of Thrones” activities.

• 5:45 to 8 p.m. — Teen and Adult Nerf Night

The library will supply nerf bullets. Those interested are advised to bring their own nerf gun.
