BENTON TOWNSHIP — Lake Michigan College is seeking up to 32 student and community actors to perform in its upcoming spring musical, “Hairspray.”

Director Paul Mow, of LMC’s Performing Arts Department, will host public auditions from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, and Wednesday, Dec. 13, in The Mendel Center’s Hanson Theatre, 1100 Yore Ave., Benton Harbor. Dance callbacks will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18.

A highly choreographed musical, the show will require some performers with extensive dance and vocal experience. Contenders will be asked to read a selection of slides from the show, and should come prepared with one or two pieces of American musical theater music, no longer than 32 measures. Comedic monologues up to 90 seconds will also be welcome.

People may contact Director Paul Mow at pmtenor@gmail.com for more information.

“Hairspray” performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 25. LMC performance and event information is available at TheMendelCenter.com or by calling The Mendel Center box office at (269) 927-8700.

“Hairspray,” — a winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical — is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant-high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs, Mendel Center officials said.

The musical is set in 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire — to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star.

She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network: all without denting her ‘do.

“Hairspray” is presented through special arrangement with Musical Theatre International. All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI, 421 W. 54th St., New York City, New York.
