Kalamazoo man dies after crashing into tree outside Cassopolis

CASSOPOLIS — A Kalamazoo man died after crashing his vehicle into a tree outside Cassopolis Monday morning, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies with the department were to dispatched to a reported accident at 10:44 a.m. on Decatur Road near Shurte Street in Penn Township.

Emergency personnel who arrived at the scene discovered that a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Russell Jett Jr., of Kalamazoo, had left the roadway and struck a nearby tree. Jett, a driver with Kalamazoo’s Tire Wholesalers who was in transit to Cassopolis, sustained fatal injuries due to the crash.

Jett is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash; alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors.

Members of the Penn Township and Cassopolis Central fire departments, as well as Life Care Ambulance, assisted sheriff deputies at the scene.
