Dowagiac Union High School journalism students took advantage of an opportunity to learn photography skills from one of Dowagiac’s most esteemed professionals.

Scott Rose visited the high school on Friday, Oct. 20, and took five journalism students under his wing during a photography workshop. Students were able to explore cutting edge photography equipment and learn about what goes into taking great photos.

Journalism student Jasmine Zeleznikar was one of Rose’s mentees.

“My time with Scott Rose on Friday was informational,” Zeleznikar said. “I learned more about the camera and how to use it and would love to learn more. We each got the chance to take pictures with the camera and he would tell us how we could make them better.”

Rose is also consistently spotted taking pictures on the sidelines at any given Dowagiac sporting event. It does not stop there, as he also makes professional edits and posts the photos on social media, all at no cost.

“Our students and community members are so lucky to have somebody like Scott Rose,” said journalism instructor Brittany Loca. “His photos are beautiful and exciting, and the time he commits to our kids is pretty moving. My journalism students definitely have a great role model.”

DUHS journalism students can be spotted following his footsteps at sporting events, watching and learning from a pro.

“I would like to have the chance to learn from him again,” Zelezikar said.
