What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Monday, Nov. 6

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night

This activity is for tweens. The library is starting a new game night just for youth 9 to 12 years old. There will be an Xbox 360 (or Xbox One) and board games out, as well as art and crafts supplies. Snacks will be provided.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA Niles has a room reserved at the library every Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit cdaweb.org.

Tuesday, Nov. 7

• 10:30 a.m. – Passport Pals

The community is invited for a special story time tour of the world. Each week, there will be books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the special country of the month.

• 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Tabletop RPG Night

The community is invited to participate in an evening of gaming, from Dungeons and Dragons to Shadowland.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

This activity includes a read aloud story time. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while listeners eat chips and follow along. All ages are welcome.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Women’s 12-Step Meeting

This is for women searching for support working through the 12 steps of AA. Drop-ins are welcome.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Lego Building Challenge

Participants are welcome to make any Lego creation and show it to the youth services staff. 

Wed., Nov. 8

• Multiple times — Storytime day

Squealers (newborns to 18 months) at 9:30 a.m., squeakers (18 months to 3 years) at 10 a.m., squigglers (18 months to 5 years) at 10:30 a.m., story time (children ages 3+) at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Michiana Landscape Study

The Michiana Landscape Study group will welcome South Bend photographer Laura Elliot as she presents, “Beside Still Waters: A Collection of Bible Verses and Floral Photography.”  This presentation is free and open to the public.

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Michigan Works/ Kinexus

Talent development specialists can help register those in need for unemployment and evaluate applicant’s strengths and skills, edit or help update their resume, sharpen interview skills, and more. For more information on Mi Works visit michiganworks.org/job-seekers.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — The Connection

As Berrien County’s Housing Resource Center, The Connection provides a centralized intake that works together with the consumer to rapidly re-house those who are homeless.  Housing Resource Specialists will be at the library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Project Homeless Connect

Project Connect is all about connecting individuals and families with services and resources available in Berrien County including: housing and utility services, employment services, medical and dental services, veteran services, mental health and substance abuse services, homelessness services, and elderly and disability services. Those who attend have the opportunity to receive a free lunch, a free take-home bag (first 100), or Feeding America Food Truck box. • 1:30 to 3 p.m. — Positive Parenting Program

This activity is for parents or caretakers who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills that will promote their child’s development and potential. Discussion group topics include positive parenting, dealing with disobedience, managing fighting and aggression, developing good bedtime routines, and hassle-free shopping with children. • 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – Storytime

This activity is for children 3 and up. Storytime features three books, a color song and music and movement. The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet and a craft.

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers are available to teach new guests how to play.  Other board games are also available.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens are invited to come and hang out for a night of activities, including games, snacks, book sand a place to study in the teen department. 

Friday, Nov. 10

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization. TOPS offers tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with the opportunity for group fellowship and recognition. New members are welcome.

• 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — OnStaff USA Hiring Event

• 3 to 5 p.m. – Twisted Stitches

People may enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while they work on their yarn or sewing project.  Rookies are welcome; a teacher and a few loaner tools will help people get started.

• 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. — Tween Book Club

This is a book discussion group for children ages 8 to 12. There will be snacks and discussion. This month features “A Snicker of Magic”  by Natalie Lloyd. 

Saturday, Nov. 11

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Toddler Dance Party

This musical program is aimed for toddlers to help strengthen the little brain and body muscles.  The program utilizes music to reinforce hand eye coordination, cross brain exercises, and tactile and sensory movements. This program is for newborns to 5 years old.

• 10 to 2 p.m. — Jr. Garden Club

Each month, Ms. Ann will present a lesson on gardening and nature. There will also be a snack, and a craft connected with the topic. This group is for ages 3 to 12.

• 1 to 5 p.m. — Game Day for Adults

Those 18 or older are invited to play video games or board games. There will be board games, cards, tabletop games, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U games set up.

• 5:30 to 8 p.m. — Teen and Adult Nerf Night

Teens (13 and older) and adults are invited to come to the library for an after-hours round of Nerf games with an emphasis on strategy and teamwork.  Registration is 5:30 to 6 p.m., game play begins at 6 p.m.. Please arrive before the library closes at 6 p.m.; all participants must have a signed waiver on file in order to play.
