Southwestern Michigan College Department of Visual and Performing Arts presents the 2017 fall band concert on 7:30 p.m. Friday in the theatre of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the Dowagiac campus.

Featured will be the SMC symphonic band, jazz ensemble and brass band, under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Korzun, and the SMC Flute Choir, under the direction of Christina Gibson.

Admission is free. Donations are gratefully accepted. All donations go towards activities for SMC performing arts students.

A highlight of the fall band concert will be works of art created by SMC art students inspired by two selections the symphonic band performs.

It culminates a collaborative project between visual arts and music where students listen to the selections, then under the guidance of graphic design instructor Bill Rothwell, respond to these selections through their art.

Art works created will be shown at the concert while the symphonic band performs each selection.

The two pieces selected for this collaboration are “Kindred Spirits” by Brian Balmages and “Ricochet” by Sean O’Loughlin.

The Symphonic Band will also perform “The Crosley March” by Henry Fillmore and “Mambo” from the musical “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein.

SMC’s Jazz Ensemble performs the old standard “Bye Bye Blackbird” arranged by Kris Berg, the Duke Ellington classic “Things Ain’t What They Used to Be” arranged by Alan Baylock, the Stevie Wonder hit “Sir Duke” arranged by Michael Philip Mossman and “Jazz Police” by Gordon Goodwin. d

“Sir Duke” refers to Duke Ellington.

Selections by the SMC Brass Band include “Sea Songs” by Ralph Vaughn Williams, music from the movie “The Mission” by Ennio Morricone and “Chorale and Toccata” by Stephen Bulla.

The concert concludes with the combined bands performing “Sky is Waiting” by Samuel Hazo and “The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas” by Mayhew Lake.

“Sky is Waiting” depicts mankind’s eternal quest for flight and exploration.

“The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas” is a short whimsical encore composed for the Sousa band that was John Philip Sousa’s favorite encore selection.
