A Cassopolis man has succumbed to injuries sustained when he was struck by a train early Friday morning.

According to Cassopolis Police Chief Brian LaValle, police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a CN freight train at East State Street near McDonald’s at 5:09 a.m.

“When our officer arrived on scene, the man was still alive,” LaValle said. “He was transported from the scene by LifeCare Ambulance and taken to the Dowagiac hospital.”

LaValle said some family has been notified, but the department is withholding the victim’s name pending further family notification. He said the man was 63 years old and a resident of Cassopolis.

School buses were delayed for approximately 10 to 15 minutes Friday morning, but the intersection is now clear and open to traffic.
