A vehicle fire claimed the lives of two people in Ontwa Township Wednesday evening, according to police.

Officers responded to the accident around 8 p.m. Wednesday on Elkhart Road north of Redfield Street.

The initial investigation indicates that a truck was driving northbound on Elkhart Road, went right off the roadway, hit a power pole and a large stump and landed on the roof of the vehicle before coming to a stop in the roadway.

The two occupants of the vehicle were both trapped inside as the vehicle caught fire, resulting in their deaths.

The victims of the crash have been identified by police. The driver of the truck was identified as Joshua Eugene Kilian, 27, of Elkhart. The passenger was identified as Nickole Lynn Nichols, 30, of Elkhart.

The accident investigation remains open at this time.
