What’s happening at the Niles District Library?

The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Monday, Oct. 30

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night

This activity is for tweens. The library is starting a new game night just for youth 9 to 12 years old. There will be an Xbox 360 (or Xbox One) and board games to play, as well as art and crafts supplies. Snacks will be provided.

• 7 to 8 p.m. — CDA Niles

Chemically Dependent Anonymous is a 12-step fellowship for anyone seeking freedom from drug and alcohol addiction. CDA Niles has a room reserved at the library every Monday and Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. For more information visit cdaweb.org.

Tuesday, Oct. 31

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

The community is invited for a story time tour of the world. Each week, there will be books, songs, a craft and other surprises relating to the chosen country of the month.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

This activity includes a read-aloud story time. Every Tuesday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book, while listeners eat chips and follow along. All ages are welcome.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Women’s 12-Step Meeting

This is for women searching for support working through the 12 steps of AA. Drop-ins are welcome.

Wednesday, Nov. 1

• Multiple times – Storytime day

Squealers (birth-18 months) at 9:30 a.m., squeakers (18 months-3 years) at 10 a.m., squigglers (18 months-5 years) at 10:30 a.m., story time (children ages 3+) at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

• 4 to 5:30 p.m. — Niles Public Arts Commission

• Canceled — CDA Niles

Thursday, Nov. 2

• 10 a.m. — The Connection

As Berrien County’s Housing Resource Center, The Connection provides a centralized intake that works together with the consumer to rapidly re-house those who are homeless. The Connection offers the following services and resources when available: community referrals, housing information, housing case management, eviction assistance, rental assistance and security deposit assistance.

• 10 to 11:30 a.m. — Positive Parenting Program

This activity is for parents or caretakers who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills that will promote their child’s development and potential. Discussion group topics include positive parenting, dealing with disobedience, managing fighting and aggression, developing good bedtime routines, and hassle-free shopping with children. • 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

This activity is for children ages 3 and up. Storytime features three books, a color song, and music and movement. The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet and a craft.

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — Mahjong

Volunteers will be available to teach new guests how to play.  Other board games are also available.

• 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Positive Parenting: Parenting Teens

This is for parents or caretakers who wish to learn a variety of parenting skills that will promote the development and potential of their teenager. 

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

Teens are invited to come and hang out for a night of activities. There will be games, snacks, books and a place to study in the teen department. 

Friday, Nov. 3

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS Meeting

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization. TOPS offer tools and programs for healthy living and weight management, with group fellowship and recognition. New members are welcome.

• 3 to 5 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

The community is invited to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and chat while working on yarn or sewing projects. Rookies are welcome. The teacher and a few loaner tools will help to new guests get started.

• 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. — An Evening at Hogwarts

The community is welcome to join the Niles District Library and the Niles History as the Chapin Mansion transforms into Hogwarts for an evening of fun, including wands, potions, Quidditch, and some mystery, too. Participants can find out what house they belong to and join friends in celebrating the 20th anniversary of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Participants are invited to don their creative costume. There will be a Harry Potter Costume Contest as well. The Chapin Mansion is located at 508 E. Main St.

Saturday, Nov. 4

• 10 a.m. to noon – Chess Club

This club is great for those who love chess. This group meets twice monthly to play.  All ages and abilities are welcome. Those who do not know how to play can get lessons. This club meets in the children’s department. 

• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Chess Tournament

A chess tourney for all members of the National Chess Federation. Staff will have boards available for non-members as well.

• 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Treeclimbers Genealogy Group

Most genealogists find the most valuable research tool is other genealogists. The community is invited to research and share their findings.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Craftastic Saturday: Swap Meet

The community is welcome to trade in their old craft supplies for new ones during the Craftastic Saturday: Swap Meet. Supplies can be dropped off any time at the library before Friday, and then participants can come back Saturday to find some new treasures.
