Dowagiac man arrested for shooting at apartment complex

A Dowagiac man is in police custody on suspicions of firing off several shots inside and outside his apartment Sunday evening, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers with the department were dispatched at around 9:21 p.m.  on reports that a man had been spotted outside Eagle’s Woods Apartments brandishing a firearm. Police were told that the man had been walking near the driveway of the complex with a handgun, which he fired off at one point.

Officers were not able to locate the suspect outside after arriving, and instead approached his apartment, where they could hear an argument between a man and woman, followed by a gun shot from inside. Police immediately set up a perimeter around the apartment — where officers were told children were also residing — and attempted to make contact with the people inside.

Law enforcement also ordered occupants of nearby apartments to evacuate, and took them to Baymont Inn across the street from the complex. The Cass County Warrant Service Team was called in to assist with the situation, and the Berrien County Tactical Response Unit was placed on stand-by to help out as well.

Officers eventually located the suspect’s wife, and made contact with the man inside the apartment through the telephone. After talking with the man, he agreed to come out and turn himself over to police custody, which he did a short time later without incident.

After obtaining a search warrant, police entered the residence and found three firearms inside, including a shotgun, a rifle and a 9-millimeter caliber handgun, which were taken into police custody. They also found evidence of a bullet being shot into the ceiling of the apartment.

No one was injured in the course of the incident.

The 34-year-old suspect, of Dowagiac, is being detained on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, resisting and obstructing police, and possession of a firearm while intoxicated. Authorities are withholding his name pending his arraignment in Cass County District Court, which is expected to take place Tuesday afternoon.

Members of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Pokagon Tribal Police and Dowagiac Fire Department assisted authorities at the scene.
