Dowagiac 12-year-old struck by bus

A 12-year-old Dowagiac Middle School student suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a bus outside the school Friday afternoon, according to the Dowagiac Police Department.

Officers with the city were dispatched to a reported accident between a Dowagiac Dial-a-Ride bus and a pedestrian at the 600 block of Riverside Drive around 2:42 p.m. that afternoon. Upon arrival, police discovered the 12-year-old victim of the accident, and began talking with eyewitnesses at the scene.

Police were told the accident occurred when the 12-year-old boy ran in front of the South Bend bus on Riverside Drive and was struck.

The victim sustained serious injuries from the crash, and was transported to Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac by Pride Care Ambulance.

He was later airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. His condition is unknown at this time.

Members of the Dowagiac Fire Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Pokagon Tribal Police assisted city police at the scene.

Dowagiac Police investigated the incident along with the accident investigation unit from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office. The crash remains under investigation; anyone with information is asked to contact the Dowagiac Police Department at (269) 782-9743.

Also this weekend, a Benton Harbor man was killed in a farming accident outside the city in Silver Creek Township, according to the Cass County Sherriff’s Office.

Around 5:44 p.m. Saturday, 69-year-old Roger Molter was attempting to park a cherry picker in a barn on Dixon Street for the winter, when he ended up pinned between the machine and the wall, resulting in his death. He was discovered inside the barn by a family member, who called in emergency medical services.

Authorities pronounced Molter dead at the scene.

Members of Pride Care Ambulance, Sister Lakes Fire Department and the Silver Creek Township Police Department assisted Cass County deputies at the scene.
