BUCHANAN — Those itching to spend a weekend morning doing something more productive than eating cereal while watch reruns on the TV will have their chance Saturday.

First United Methodist Church, 132 S. Oak St., Buchanan, will host the sixth annual “Make a Difference Day” in Buchanan from 9 a.m. to noon.

The annual event is aimed toward getting people out in the community to do a variety of community service projects, with the intent to improve the city of Buchanan and the lives of those who live within its limits, said Brittany McNeely, the head of marketing and communication for Make a Difference Day.

McNeely said that there will be a variety of activities for people of all ages and skill levels to take part in, from painting and park cleanups to writing cards to soldiers and making blankets for veterans.

“There’s something for everybody,” McNeely said.

Even with the variety of projects, McNeely said the main focus of this year’s event will be parks in the area, as those organizing the Make a Difference Day have heard from many youth that the public spaces need work and updating.

First United Methodist Church has spent the last six months contacting schools and other locations and organizations in the Buchanan area to find out what projects need to be completed and to find volunteers.

“We are really excited,” McNeely said. “We are hoping this is going to be our best year yet.”

McNeely said she is aware that three hours is a short time frame for a community-wide day of service, but she has no doubts that all the planned projects will be completed in the time frame, as they are currently expecting nearly 120 volunteers.

“We get more done on this one Saturday than our city workers and other boards can get done all year long,” she said. “We have all these community members that show up and want to make a difference in our community and make it a better place to live.”

A volunteer for Make a Difference Day for the last four years, McNeely said she has always been inspired by the way that the community comes together for the event.

“Our community, Buchanan as a whole, I really think is kind of like a family,” McNeely said. “When there is a need, our community really comes together and rallies as a whole. Rather than just going to the board and saying there is an issue that needs addressing, Buchanan would rather get up and do something about it.”

To volunteer for Make a Difference Day, people can register at 9 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, email McNeely at  MakeADifferenceBuchanan@gmail.com or register online at eventbrite.com/e/make-a-difference-buchanan-registration-38068205026?aff=facebook.
