Government debt should not fall on shoulders of poor

The Republicans continually talk about tax breaks.

Their tax breaks in the past have resulted in 45 percent of Americans who do not pay taxes. These people will not be helped by further tax breaks.

Even though they do not pay federal income tax, they pay sales taxes, excise taxes (gasoline, tobacco and alcohol) and Social Security and Medicare taxes. They may also pay state taxes.

All these taxes hit the poor the hardest, taking a larger percentage of their spendable income than the very wealthy pay.

Let’s talk about more progressive income taxes on income over $200,000.
